06/27/11 The History of the M-Hill climb
Did you know that one of the most cherished School of Mines traditions is the M-Hill climb? According to the Spring/Summer 2011 edition of the SDSM&T “The Hardrock”, in 1912 a group of 75 students and faculty scaled Cowboy Hill to build the iconic M, using more than 100 wagon loads of rock. For more than 10 years, students climbed the hill each year to pull weeds sprouting between the rocks before they were replaced with concrete in 1922. Today, students carry on the tradition by climbing the hill each fall to whitewash the M. Our benefactor, Edna “Eddie” Larsen, attended SDSM&T. The HLMP Foundation wants to extend our gratitude to the SDSM&T Alumni Association for allowing us to build our trails through their property! The “M” is the beacon that draws all of our trail users to the Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park.
50.00 Reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals who continue to trespass by driving their motorized 4WD vehicles and motorcycles on our HLMP park property and trails. The Foundation has installed fences and gates but we can’t stop these trespassing slobs without your help! If you can get a license plate number report it immediately to 911!
10/6/10 - Master trail builder, Dave Dessel, also known as the “Wizard”, has masterfully created some of the nicest trails yet to be built in our Park! The new trails referred to by Dave as “The North Forty” feature 12 switchbacks through the natural drainage and wooded terrain (see Media for new photos).
09/01/10 - The first person to leave a comment on our website is Katie Teeslink who said this about HLMP “Wow! Rapid City is lucky to have such a spectacular bike park. The trails offer something for all levels of riders. In addition, it’s right in town, many people can ride down, enjoy some single track, and pedal home. A world class park right here in our city. Thank you!
